EXPLORE THINGS TO DO

Historical Riches

A Glimpse into the Past

St. Croix, inhabited by the Carib and Arawak Indians prior to Columbus' arrival, has a storied history. This island paradise was sought after by Spain, Netherlands, England, France, and even the Knights of Malta. However, it wasn't until 1733 that the French Government sold St. Croix to the Danish West India & Guinea Co., which ignited the island's thriving journey. The Danish influence is evident throughout the island, from its architecture to its cultural roots.

Christiansted, one of the two main towns on St. Croix, was originally a bustling port town and served as the former capital of the Danish West Indies. It's also the boyhood home of Alexander Hamilton. Federick Moth, a Danish Lieutenant, designed Christiansted, transforming it into a picturesque town that mirrors the charm of Copenhagen in the 18th century.

The Birth of Hotel Caravelle

Our location on the waterfront in 18th-century Christiansted is steeped in history. The land on which Hotel Caravelle stands was once used for loading and off-loading ships' goods, including sugar, fruits, and live cattle. It also housed a warehouse, a townhouse, and even an ice house in its time.

In 1967, Mr. Wnty Hilty, an artistic soul from Denmark, leased the land from Norman Skeoch and built Hotel Caravelle. With its 43 rooms designed to reflect 18th-century Danish architecture, the hotel opened with great anticipation and success. Today, our property is a charming complex of gift shops, souvenir stores, clothing shops, offices, and several restaurants, including our flagship waterfront restaurant that has hosted celebrities and visitors from all walks of life.
